Abstract

The Russian Federation’s engagement in Syria and the Kurdish issue

This paper analyses the Russian Federation’s involvement in Syria and its influence on the Kurdish issue. This article also presents, directly and indirectly, elements which have an impact on Russia’s activity in Syria and the role of the Kurds in this case. The author has distinguished, among other things, elements such as historical and political aspects, as well as issues related to security and energy. Moreover, he discusses the multidimensional aspects of Russia’s involvement for the future situation in Syria, as well as for the political and military activity of the Syrian Kurds. Due to the complexity of this matter, the content has been divided into the following sections: Russia’s multidimensional involvement in Syria, the Middle East in the Russian Federation’s New Foreign Policy Concept, Russia-Turkey relations, Turkey’s military intervention in Syria and its effects on the situation of the Kurdish minority, and finally on the matter of autonomy of the Syrian Kurds.
