Politics, Ecology and Activism: Kurdish women and climate catastrophe in South-West Asia

We have pleasure to invite to the debate Politics, Ecology and Activism: Kurdish women and climate catastrophe in South-West Asia which will take place in the Asia and Pacific Museum and accompanies the photo exhibition Women, Life, Freedom: Kurdish Women's Work Through the Eyes of Kurdish Photographers organised in the scope of the ALCITfem project. The panel will take place on the 23th of November, Solec 24, Warszawa, 6PM.

 

Envirionmantal topics start to play very crucial role in studies on South-West Asia (Middle East). Changing climate, pollution, state supported mega-projects and environmental consequences of military conflicts all shape social reality of the region, both in terms of events reaching newspapers highlights and everyday life. During our meeting we will look at the experience of climate catastrophe and politics of nature focusing mostly on experiences and activities of Kurdish women.

 

Panelists:

 

Marcin Skupiński – phd candidate at Unniveristy of Warsaw and research fellow in ALCITfem project. In his presentation he will focus on consequences of environmental crisis for the political project of the Autnomous Administration of North and East Syria (Rojava) discussing the limits of ecological paradigm of Rojava Revolution and the involvement of Turkish state in weaponizing water and drought.

 

Cansu Yumuşak – activist associated with Polen Ecology Group working in Turkey. She will highlight the struggles of environmental activist in North Kurdistan/South-East Turkey.

 

Dobrosława Wiktor-Mach – lecturer in the Centre for Advanced Studies of Population and Religion (CASPAR), Krakow University of Economics. I her presentation she will discuss the transnational aspects of environmental activism in different parts of Kurdistan.
